The Three Pillars of Global Communication: Sensitivity, Consistency, Localization

By Jessica FolkesMar 1, 20255 min read

Abstract

Introduce the core thesis using Unilever as the anchor: when cultural sensitivity, consistent messaging, and localization work together, multinational communication becomes both scalable and credible.

Cultural sensitivity, consistent messaging, and localization are often treated as competing priorities by multinational communications teams—more of one seems to require less of another. Unilever's record suggests the opposite: the three function as mutually reinforcing pillars that become more effective together than any one deployed alone.

This post defines each pillar in operational terms and sets up the series: how Unilever deploys all three simultaneously across hundreds of markets, and what other multinationals can learn from the pattern.
